How To Enable Android Virtual Devices under AMD Ryzen

Last Updated: April 24, 2020 | Reading Time: 2 minutes

I recently upgraded my PC and switched to the AMD processor, Ryzen 5. I was impressed with the performance so far until I had to install Android Studio to get the Android Virtual Device running for one of my projects.

To use Android Virtual Device, installing HaXM is required to accelerate the rendering process for the Virtual Devices running smoothly. The bad news is HaXM is required an Intel processor to run.

The Good News, since Android Studio 3.2 beta, Hyper-V, which is developed by Microsoft, is also supported, and it can run under AMD processors. So the next step is to activate the Hyper-V.

Bios Setting

Before we can activate Hyper-V, the virtualization engine must be enabled inside the Bios. So reboot your PC and get into bios to make the change, usually press Del key right after the screen showing the logo of the motherboard manufacturer.

Windows Setting

Inside Windows, you can access the Windows Feature by click start button, and type “Windows Feature” and select “Turn Windows features on or off”.

Then new the new window appear, scroll down and check Hyper-V and Windows Hypervisor Platform.

If the checkbox is not clickable, then probably you did it wrong on the bios settings, check again if its still off.

If you run Android Studio and Run the Device, the Simulator will immediately run.
